Most common questions about barefoot.
If you want to know more, come visit us in store. What exactly is barefoot footwear?
Barefoot footwear is footwear that respects the natural shape and movement of the foot. It is characterised by a flat sole (zero drop), a wide toe box that gives the toes room to spread, minimal weight and no elements that correct or alter the foot's natural biomechanics. The aim is for the foot to move as if it were bare, with full sensory feedback from the ground and complete freedom of movement.
Are all barefoot shoes the same?
No. Although they share the basic principles (zero drop, wide toe box, flexible sole and light weight), there are big differences between brands and models in terms of last shape, sole thickness, materials and aesthetics. Some are more minimalist, others more versatile for everyday use. At Sapiens we help you find the footwear that best suits your foot, your activity and where you are in your transition process.
How can I transition to barefoot safely?
The key is gradual progression. The foot needs time to adapt after years in conventional footwear: muscles have weakened, tendons have shortened and the proprioceptive system has become less sensitive. We recommend starting with just a few hours a day on not-too-hard surfaces, and increasing gradually. At Sapiens we guide you through the whole process to make the transition safe and effective.
"I can't go completely flat. I need some heel."
This is a very common feeling at first, and there is a clear explanation: years of heeled footwear have shortened the Achilles tendon and calf muscles, so the body interprets the flat position as uncomfortable or even painful. That does not mean you cannot adapt — it means you need to do so gradually. With time, mobility work and the right guidance, most people who thought they could never wear zero drop end up doing so without difficulty.
Can I mix barefoot with traditional footwear?
Yes, and in fact this is the most common approach during the transition. There is no need to abandon conventional footwear all at once; what matters is gradually increasing the time you spend in barefoot and reducing time in heeled shoes. Over time, many people naturally end up wearing barefoot for most of the day, but every process is different and the most important thing is that it works for you.
I have a condition. Could barefoot work for me?
It depends on the condition and where you are in your process. In some cases, barefoot footwear can be very beneficial: hallux valgus, plantar fasciitis, flexible flat foot or postural problems caused by conventional footwear are situations where many people have experienced significant improvements. In other cases, more careful assessment is needed. At Sapiens we are not doctors, but we can guide you and, if necessary, refer you to a trusted professional who understands the barefoot approach.
